Amsterdam seen from the canal, on the water is a whole different thing from walking or biking the city's streets. Legs dangled over the water's edge, tiny little cafes and bars poked away in unexpected corners and skinny passageways of the canal, people hanging out of their windows to take in the sun, the waterside flat-fronted baroque buildings in so many different hues, there's a lot to admire from down here.

I went out on my friends' boat with their cute dog but there's plenty of boats you can hire and drive yourself, even without a boat license, to avoid the big tourist barges and choose your own adventure.

There's a few little guys in Amsterdam who rent out electric boats, try Mokumboot, Rent a Boat or Sloep de Len.
