Freya McOmish

Freya, Australian-born, half-Danish freelance filmmaker, photographer, graphic designer and all-round firecracker is the co-founder of Scandinavia Standard, the site for scandi-lovers, by scandi-lovers.

She loves her adopted home, Copenhagen, for its simple beauty. The design freak inside her delights in looking around her and exhaling in wonder at the perfectly primed and preserved buildings, bike paths and interiors.

We stayed with Freya at her home in Nyhavn, tagging along to all her favourite spots to work and play, bike gang-ing all over town together. Here are her top secret spots to find the light in this happy city.

“Outside, the buildings stretch across centuries colourful, whitewashed or red brick and the smell of danish pastries wafts through the air.”

“Inside, the interiors are lush zen dens that keep even the most aesthetically-sensitive satisfied, perfect for cosy, candelit times with friends and family.”

Grantoftegard

“This organic farm is a short train ride (or long bike ride!) north of Copenhagen. It’s open to the public and you can visit to buy fantastic fresh produce.”

Cafe Gammel Torv

“A lunchtime tradition, the first time I came to Denmark, I was taken to this hidden and very authentic Smørrebrød Cafe, by a Politiken food critic.”

The Black Diamond

“It’s time to show off our daily work space! Scandinavia Standard has had several offices across Copenhagen, but our hub that we return to regularly is this modern library on the water.”

Royal Library Garden

“A small, somewhat hidden garden. There’s an ancient mulberry tree that’s almost 400 years old, in August, venture under the curtain of leaves and enjoy the tree’s big juicy mulberries.”

Cafe Malmo

“One of the oldest bodegas in Copenhagen, the walls are decorated with fisherman paraphernalia, spoons and an amazing array of beer bottles. Plus, there’s a jukebox filled with Danish classic, Dr. Hook and a lot of Whitney. You’re welcome.”
