I met Made as I was wandering the streets of Ubud one very hot day. Dressed in traditional Balinese dress, he told me he was a local driver and offered to drive me home in his beat up green jeep. After this, Made drove me to many faraway places around the island, so we ended up spending quite a few hours in his jeep.
Made was a Journeymaker for me because his job was just to get me to these places, but he offered so much more of himself on the way. From him I learnt about Balinese culture; traditions like full moon ceremonies and waterfall healing rituals his wife performed were explained to me. We compared our beliefs about life and death (we had many hours in this car to while away, Bali's a big island!), and he revealed some of his favourite sacred spots around the island - healer Ibu Jero, the Bedugal Botanical Gardens, Tegenungan Waterfall.
