Roll out of bed in the dark, race up the hill in the in-between hours before sunrise and make it to the top of the hill for the brief moment when the sun starts to sweep over the land and sea. This is the place where the sun touches the land first in all of Australia, being the most easterly point of the continent.
On top of a hill at Cape Byron is the town's famous lighthouse. We thought we'd be fairly alone here at sunrise, my brother and sister and I, but we were very wrong.
This is a moment people wake up for, early, in the dark. It wasn't the quiet, sacred moment we were dreaming of but witnessing nature's show like this surrounded by people who want to watch it in awe too was just as good.
Cape Byron Lighthouse,
(check the time for sunrise here and get there half an hour earlier so you don't miss it like we almost did!)
