Staying at Our Land Island meant we explored Kerala's backwaters by tiny canoe in lieu of the overnight stay on a traditional wooden houseboat that most visitors to Alleppey opt for.
We watched those majestic houseboats cruise the river beside us and in our little boat we navigated down skinny canals into local villages built right on the river banks. As with so many other towns and cities we saw in India, the river seemed so important to daily life here. We rowed quietly past locals hanging out their washing, cycling to somewhere, chatting to their neighbours, swimming in the river, collecting fish from nets they'd set up in front of their homes. From the canoe we watched the sun turn from gold to orange to pinky red and then disappear, turning the whole sky pink and glittering on the water.
