Our truffle hunt started before sunrise. Not because that's the best time to find truffles, because that's the best time to hide your car. When you're a famed truffle hunter, your car driving up a mountain road can lead a hungry local right to all your secret spots. So we drove in the dark.

After sunrise, with dew drops making everything sparkle, we set out with the famous truffle hunter and his dogs. The dogs sniff the scent, gleefully run off in pursuit, dig the gems out of the ground, then try to sink their teeth in before the hunter gets to them; dogs like truffles too.

We took home the spoils of our hunt to sprinkle over everything.
