Stepping or driving off the ferry and onto this little, nature-filled island an hour or two from Brisbane is like breathing out and letting go.

It's back to basics here, reminiscent of an old-school beach holiday where meals, beach trips, surfing, walks, everything is simple; everyone lives slow here.

There's plenty of bush and sand and sea to immerse yourself in, as well as wildlife on the sea and land.

What follows is our perfect day at Stradbroke Island.

p.s. Take a car over here, there's a bus but it's not too frequent or easy!

or drive your car onto the barge (bookings recommended).

NORTH GORGE | Swim at this sheltered Gorge in clear blue waters with waves rolling in gently
through the narrow passage between awe-inspiring cliff faces.

PRAWN SHACK PICNIC | Pack a picnic of cooked prawns from this fresh seafood shack and take it
across the road to the Point Lookout park, looking over to the sea and horizon beyond.

NORTH GORGE WALK | Walk at sunset along the cliffs lining the coastline all the way from Point Lookout
to North Gorge to the Surf Club, spotting dolphins and turtles and kangaroos and whales on your way.

POINT LOOKOUT SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB | You'll spot it perched on the cliff from across the gorge on
your walk; end the day with a few beers looking out to sea at this surf club come weekend bar.
