New York has the High Line and Paris has the Promenade Plantée, a linear park built up above street level, on top of the now obsolete Vincennes railway line.
It sees joggers, sunbathers, lovers hand-in-hand and picnickers with baguettes, on their way to the green and pretty Jardin de Reuilly at the end of the 4.7km walk. From here you can look in on what life looks like in all of the unique little apartments at eye level and admire Paris' famous rooftops from a different angle.
Pack a picnic and set up in the flower-filled Jardin de Reuilly at the end of the journey, there's even a mysterious sparkling water fountain (eau petillante) to be found for filling up drink bottles on hot days.
Entrance off Rue de Lyon,
Paris, 75012
